Fish River Canyon day trip
We had the most wonderful day trip with a local farmer (Jannie), to the canyon. The road, such as it was, was more of a track with sharp volcanic rocks all over it. I was glad I was not driving, altho' when Jannie explained that the Ubolt had broken on his 4x4 so we could not drive all the way down to the canyon floor, I thought rather him than me. After visiting a few viewpoints, we then drove halfway down into the canyon, and hiked down the rest. It was not so much a matter of driving down into the canyon, as the landrover climbing its way down ledges and sliding along steep verges. It was quite exciting if you have a deathwish, which luckily I do. Meandering along the canyon floor, and lying by the water was wonderful. Then we walked back up, and went for a barbeque lunch at a deserted farmhouse. Homemade kudu sausages, lamb steaks, salads and the best of all, homemade bread cut into doorstops and made into sandwiches with cheese, tomato and onion, which were then grilled over the coals. Wonderful day...
